Matter: The New Smart Home Standard and What It Means for Your Home
For years, smart-home devices had one big problem: a light from one brand, a lock from another and a speaker from a third often could not talk to each other. Matter is an industry standard, developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance with the support of the big smart-home platforms, that aims to fix this.
What Matter does
- It gives compatible devices a common language, so a Matter light bulb can be controlled from different apps and assistants.
- It is designed to run mostly inside your home network, so basic controls can keep working even if the internet is down.
- It works over the home network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and over Thread, a low-power mesh network used by small battery devices such as sensors.
- You can usually add one device to more than one smart-home app at the same time.
What it does not do
- It does not make every older device work. Existing devices may need a hub or a bridge to join.
- Not every feature of every device is covered yet, so a brand’s own app may still offer extras.
- It does not fix a weak Wi-Fi network. Devices still need a good signal where they are installed.
Planning a smart home around it
- Start with the network: reliable Wi-Fi coverage in every room, and a router that can handle many small devices.
- Choose devices that state Matter support on the box, and check which device types are covered (lights, plugs, switches, sensors, locks).
- Decide on one main app or assistant for the family, and add others only if you need them.
- Keep important functions, such as door locks and cameras, working locally and with a manual backup.
- Plan for the wiring: smart switches usually need a neutral wire, which many older switch boxes do not have, so check this before you buy.
Is it worth waiting?
You do not have to wait. Lights, switches, plugs and sensors that support Matter are available now, and devices that do not can often be added through a bridge. The best approach is to build the network and the wiring properly first, then add devices room by room.
